The Optical Afterglow of GRB971214: Further Evidence for a Varied Population
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present an R-band lightcurve of an optical transient which is likely to be associated with the gamma-ray burst event GRB971214. Our first measurement took place 17 hours after the gamma-ray event. The brightness decayed with a power-law exponent α = −1.380 ± 0.013, which is significantly faster than the other two optically identified bursts, GRB970228 and GRB970508 which had exponents of α = −1.10 ± 0.04 (Galama et al. 1997) and α = −1.141 ± 0.014 (Galama et al. 1998) respectively. The transient decayed monotonically during the first four days following the gamma-ray event in contrast with the optical transient associated with GRB970508 which increased in brightness, peaking two days after the burst, before settling to a power-law decay. This event provides clear observational evidence that the optical afterglows of gamma-ray bursts are not universal. The differences are plausibly intrinsic but could also be due to varying source redshifts. BeppoSAX spectrum of GRB971214: evidence of a substantial energy output during afterglow
We report the X/γ-ray spectrum of GRB971214 and of its afterglow. The afterglow was measured few hours after the main event and for an elapsed time of more than two days. The measure of this GRB and afterglow is relevant due to its extreme, cosmological distance (z=3.42). The prompt event shows a hard photon spectrum, consistent with a broken power law with photon indices ΓX ≈0.1 below ∼20 keV ...
متن کاملThe late-time afterglow of the extremely energetic short burst GRB 090510 revisited
Context. The Swift discovery of the short burst GRB 090510 has raised considerable attention mainly because of two reasons: first, it had a bright optical afterglow, and second it is among the most energetic events detected so far within the entire GRB population (long plus short). The afterglow of GRB 090510 was observed with Swift/UVOT and Swift/XRT and evidence of a jet break around 1.5 ks a...
متن کاملMulti-color observations of short GRB afterglows: 20 events observed between 2007 and 2010
We report on follow-up observations of 20 short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs; T90 < 2 s) performed in g′r′i′z′JHKs with the Gamma-Ray Burst Optical Near-Infrared Detector (GROND) between mid-2007 and the end of 2010. This is one of the most comprehensive data sets on GRB afterglow observations of short bursts published so far. In three cases, GROND was on target within less than 10 min after...
متن کاملRay-tracing and Interferometry in Schwarzschild Geometry
Here, we investigate the possible optical anisotropy of vacuum due to gravitational field. In doing this, we provide sufficient evidence from direct coordinate integration of the null-geodesic equations obtained from the Lagrangian method, as well as ray-tracing equations obtained from the Plebanski’s equivalent medium theory. All calculations are done for the Schwarzschild geometry, which resu...
متن کاملThe Polarization Variability in the Optical Afterglow of GRB 990712
In a recent paper, Rol and colleagues present evidence for a variable polarization in the optical afterglow following the gamma-ray burst GRB 990712. The variation is highly significant, but the position angle appears time independent. Contrary to their conclusion, we point out that this can in fact be explained with existing afterglow models, namely that of a laterally expanding jet. Subject h...
